PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's indoor track and field team opened their season Friday with the Coach O Collegiate Invitational at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center and throwers Saisha Woodward (Atlanta, Ga.) and Marcus Brown (Gaithersburg, Md.) both broke school records. Sophomore Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) first broke the women's weight throw record on Friday with a throw of 15.12 meters before Woodward, a senior, threw for 15.78 meters to set the new record. Woodward held the previous record, set on February 7, 2009 at the Christopher Newport Invitational in Virginia Beach, Va. with a throw of 14.67 meters. Brown, a freshman, set a new UMES record in the men's throw with a distance of 14.63 meters. The previous record was held by current senior James Moore (Manassas, Va.), when he set it at 11.09 meters at the MEAC Championships in Landover, Md. on February 14, 2009. The Lady Hawks placed first in 12 out of 16 events in competition against Salisbury University and Virginia State University. Junior Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) placed first in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:27.50. Sophomore Melina Gallas (Paris, France) placed first in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:17.54. The 800-meter run went to sophomore Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) with a time of 2:18.70 while the 3000-meter run went to senior Tamica Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamaica) with a time of 11:05.82. Senior Ariana Forbes (Baltimore, Md.) placed first in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.97.
In relay events, the UMES "A" team took first in both the 4x400 and distance medley with respective times of 4:00.11 and 12:49.35. Sophomore Courtney Gray (Frederick, Md.) finished first in the high jump with a distance of 1.36 meters while classmate Ameris James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a pole vault height of 2.30 meters for first place. Freshman Seneman Pollock (Waldorf, Md.) had a final distance of 5.55 meters in the long jump. In the shot put, Henry placed first with a throw of 13.99 meters while Woodward was first in the weight throw with her record 15.78 meters. The men's team placed first in 11 out of their 16 events in competition against SU, VSU and Wesley College. Sophomore Ackeem Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) finished first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.90 and in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8:11. Fellow sophomore Akheem Gauntlett (Roselle, N.J.) ran a 21.66 in the 200-meter dash. In the 3000-meter run, junior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) finished with a time of 9:15.58. The Hawks "A" team finished first in the distance medley with a time of 10:26.40. Sophomore Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.) placed first in the pole vault with a height of 3.20 meters. Freshman Dawyne Powell had a long jump distance of 7.58 meters and classmate Owen Cain had a triple jump distance of 14.62 meters. In addition to his record in the weight throw, Brown also placed first in the shot put with a distance of 15.92 meters. Both the men's and women's teams have off for nearly a month until they compete in the NYU Gotham Cup in New York, N.Y. on January 8, 2010. |
