Princess Anne, Md. -- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will host its first indoor track meet of the 2012 season when it welcomes high school and college teams from all over the east coast to the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday (Jan. 7). The UMES Coach O Invitational will begin with a high school meet held in the Hytche on Friday (Jan. 6) before the collegiate meet begins Saturday afternoon.

"This is such an exciting competition," said UMES head coach Ernest Barrett. UMES will host high school teams from Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. Elizabeth Seton (Md.), Trenton Central, Sussex County Technical (N.J.) and Dover (Del.) are a few teams representing each state in the high school competition.

"We have a beautiful campus and facility here at UMES and this is a great way to showcase our community to the region," Barrett continued.

With the conclusion of the high school meet on Saturday, the Coach O Collegiate Invitational will start Saturday afternoon. The UMES hosted competition will include Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schools Norfolk State, Morgan State, Coppin State and Howard. "I expect this to be a great meet for us (UMES)."

"When you have schools like Norfolk State and Coppin State competing you have to put forth a great performance."

This opening meet will showcase some of the Hawks talented performers from last season, and a few new names to the program. Vanessa Henry will look to break a school record for the Hawks, while Geranda Williams and Courtney Gray will compete in the team's first pentathlon. The indoor pentathlon consists of five events-the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m.

On the men's side, Ackeem Smith, a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competitor will make his 2012 season debut for the Hawks. Coach Barrett is also looking to see how his senior Damian Miles gets going in this early meet, while also taking note of his field performers in the various jumps and throws.

Results for the invitational will be posted on www.UMESHawks.com following the meet.
