Feb. 16, 2009 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) and sophomore Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the period ending Feb. 15.
James helped the women's track and field team to a third-place finish at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md. She posted 38 of team's 88 points at the event.
James had a hand in three event wins, including breaking a five-year-old MEAC indoor record in the mile run by nearly five seconds in 5:00.44. she also topped the field in the 800 meters in a time of 2:15.31.
Finally, James ran the anchor leg of the distance medley, pacing the team to a first-place finish of 12:02.01. She also was second in the 3,000 meters in 10.29.76.
Kiprotich tallied 12 points for the men's team which was fourth at the championships. He took a pair of third-place finishes in the 5,000 and 3,000 meters in 15:19.47 and 8:54.50, respectively.
The UMES track and field teams are back in action Feb 20-21 at the Virginia Tech Challenge.
