April 4, 2007 PRINCESS ANNE, MD - UMES freshman Jeremiah Hicks (Dover, Del./Dover H.S.) has been selected for the 2007 NCAA Leadership Conference, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Advisor Dr. Danita Mendez-Townsend announced today. "He is definitely a leader," said Dr. Townsend. "We are very excited about his selection for this conference. This will be a great opportunity for him to learn and foster his leadership skills." Hicks, a sprinter/jumper on the UMES track and field team, beat out three other Hawks with his selection. In order to be eligible, applicants must be in good academic standing and must have athletics eligibility remaining in the following academic year. The conference, held May 27-31 at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., is an outreach of the NCAA's CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and involves close to 325 student-athletes each year who compete in fall, winter and spring sports in Divisions I, II and III. The selected student-athletes will have an opportunity to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The five-day leadership conference, which will also consist of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to society, is provided at no cost to institutions participating in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.
