ANNAPOLIS, MD. -- Junior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) finished first in the 200 meter dash, while freshmen Shantel Lucious (Newark, N.J.) and Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.) placed first and second, respectively, in the high jump at the Navy Lid-Lifter Track and Field meet at the Wesley Brown Fieldhouse in Annapolis, Md. last Tuesday. The Hawks also placed in the top 5 at several other events throughout the meet.

Evans placed first in the field of 44 athletes who ran the 200 meter dash, finishing with a time of 24.41 seconds, a full 1.3 seconds of the second place finisher. In the high jump, Lucious won the competition with a jump 1.65 meters high, while Chappell finished second with a height of 1.60 meters.

Other top five finishers included junior Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who placed third in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:17.50, while two Hawks, sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine's, Jamaica) and junior Margaret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) placed second and fourth, respectively, in the 1000 meter run. In the 60 meter hurdles, freshman Shelasia Leitch (Newark, N.J.) placed third with a time of 9.16 seconds. Finally, the Hawk 4x400 meter relay team of Hemley, Wilmot-Francis, Evans, and Mars placed fourth among eleven teams, finishing with a time of 3:56.16.

In all, sixteen Hawks competed in a variety of events, from shot put and long jump to the 60 meter dash and the mile-long run. The Lady Hawks will now move on to compete in the Coach O College Invitational on the campus of UMES this Friday. Both the men and women will be competing in the meet beginning with field events at 1pm, and track events starting at 3pm.
