PRINCESS ANNE, MD. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawk Indoor Track and Field teams will host six schools at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center this Friday for the Coach O Collegiate Invitational. This will be the first meet this year for the men’s team and the second for the women’s, after they competed in the Navy Lid-Lifter on Tuesday. The Hawks will be hosting colleges from three states and the District of Columbia, which includes Hampton, Norfolk State, Viriginia Union, North Carolina Central, Howard and Coppin State.

The Lady Hawks come into this meet with several strong performances last Tuesday. Junior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamiaca) won the 200 meter dash while freshman Shantel Lucious (Newark, N.J.) took first in the high jump. Freshmen Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.) and Shelasia Leitch (Newark, N.J.) also had top five finishes in their events, as well as juniors Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Margaret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), and sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine’s, Jamaica).

Twenty athletes are featured on the men’s track team, which includes nine seniors, seven freshmen, three juniors, and one sophomore—thrower Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica). Other athletes headlining the track team include freshman distance runner Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain), junior jumper Devin Wynn (Baltimore, Md.) and senior sprinter Javon Spencer (Montego Bay, Jamiaca).


 

 

The meet on Friday begins with field events at 1pm followed by track events beginning at 3pm. Field events will include the weight throw, pole vault, shot put, and various jumps. Track events will start with trails for the 60 meter hurdles and dash and conclude with the 4x400 relay. In every event, the women will compete first, followed by the men. Admission to the event is free and certain events will be live streamed on umeshawks.com.
