PRINCESS ANNE, MD. In the first of two home matches this year, the Hawks Indoor Track won a variety of events at the Coach O Invitational at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center last Saturday. The meet featured field and track events with four schools competing—Howard, Hampton, Norfolk State along with host UMES.

The Lady Hawks nearly swept the field of mid-distance events, with UMES athletes winning the 500 meter and 800 meter runs. Sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine’s Jamaica) captured first in the 500 meter race with a time of 1:14.90, and Freshman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.) won the 800 meter with a time of 2:22.94.  Junior Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.41 seconds, while sophomore Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, Md.) finished right behind Halmon in the 800 meter with a time of 2:23.94. Aside from the mid-distance races, junior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamiaca) won the 60 meter dash finals with a time of 7.34 seconds, and freshman Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.) won the high jump with a distance of 1.65 meters.

While the Lady Hawks had wins in plenty of events, the men’s side registered wins in mid-distance, distance, relays, and field events. In the mid-distance races, junior Hakeem Harris (Wilmington, Del.) took second in the 200 meter with a time of 22.27 seconds, and senior Aaron Chatman (Waldorf, Md.) won the 500 meter run with a time of 1:05.81. Freshman Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain) took the mile race with a time of 4:32.20 in the distance events. In the field events, freshman Jared Kerr (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) won the long jump at 7.44 meters and junior Devin Wynn (Baltimore, Md.) won the triple jump with a distance of 14.05 meters. Juniors Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) and Rico Duncan (Cheveny, Md.) placed first and second, respectively, in the shot put and weight throw events. Simon posted a distance of 17.72 meters in the shot put and 16.71 meters in the weight throw, while Duncan posted distances on 13.55 meters in the shot put and 15.69 meters in the weight throw. The men’s teams also placed first and second in the 4x400 meter relay with times of 3:57.13 for first and 3:58.04 for second.


 

 

The Hawks will conclude its home season for Indoor Track on January 4th for the UMES HS/College Invite at the Hytche Center, which is also their next scheduled meet.
