Javier Olivas is in his third season as coach with the University Maryland Eastern Shore cross county and track & field team. He rejoins the UMES coaching staff this season in his first year as an assistant coach. Olivas spent last season apart of the University of California Santa Barbara's Track and Field coaching staff. While at UC Santa Barbara, Olivas oversaw vertical jumps, throwers, and multis. He coached one USA Junior National Qualifier and two NCAA National Qualifiers. His athletes scored a combined 59 points at the Big West Conference championships, including Big West Conference Champion Mitchell Haag. His high jumpers placed first, third,and fourth. Olivas coached Derek Masterson to a personal record decathlon point total f 7295, earning a position in the Top 30 in the nation. Masterson also achieved a personal best 16'2 1/4 in the pole vault. Olivias holds a USA Track and Field Level 1 Certification, is a USTFCCCA Certified Jumping Specialist, and is a USA Sports Performance Coach. Olivas' responsibilities include coaching the Hawks in sprints, Jumps, hurdles and multi's. As well as, recruiting, track meet management, equipment, strength and conditioning, team travel and learning the administrative aspects of running a Division I athletic program. Olivas spent his first two seasons at UMES as a graduate assistant where he obtained a Master's in the School of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. He also oversaw the pole vaulters and all throwers for indoor and outdoor track and field. In his first season as coach of the throwers in 2008-09, his group broke all school records. In addition, Olivas served as the director of strength and conditioning for the men's and women's teams at UMES. Olivas, of Del Rio, Texas, is a 2008 graduate of Texas A&M University. Before his two-years as a graduate assistant at UMES, Olivas competed at Texas A&M University. Olivas was a three-time All-Big 12 performer as well as a two-time all-region performer. In the classroom, he earned two Verizon Scholar-Athlete awards.
Olivas was also very much involved in the community as a student-athlete. He was a member of Aggie Athletes Involved, an organization of student-athletes at Texas A&M doing community service in the Brazos Valley. He was also a two year member of SAAC, representing the Track & Field team. Aside from his duties at UMES, Olivas enjoys relaxing at home, reading and crabbing on the Eastern Shore. |
