HAWKS OPEN OUTDOOR SEASON WITH STRONG PERFORMANCES

Princess Anne, Md. --The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Outdoor Track and Field team opened its 2012 season with a record breaking performance. Cynthia Anais set a new school record for UMES in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:28.83 in the Wake Forest Open. Anais broke the record which was previously held by Eva Slavikova.
UMES had two first place finishes. Vanessa Henry took the top spot in the shot put with a distance of 16.37 meters, while Anais won the 1,500-meter run. The team had eight top 10 finishes on the women's side of the Open. Lexia Robinson finished seventh in the shot put with a distance of 13.92 meters and eighth in the discus with a toss of 39.99 meters (131' 02").
Emilie Ducados finished seventh in the 400-meter dash in 56.34, and led the 4x400-meter relay team to a second place finish with a time of 3:39.59. Teammates Lenora Firmin-Guion, Annis Mars and Cynthia Anais joined Ducados in the finish.
Geranda Williams placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.10 meters (39' 8.5"). On the men's side, Rico Taylor finished third in the triple jump with a height of 2.02 meters. Owen Cain took fifth place with his best attempt of 1.92 meters in the triple jump, and finished with a top 10 jump in the long jump with a finish of 6.83 meters.
Jermol Dix also finished in the top 10 with his toss of 11.31 meters in the shot put. Freshman Dillon Simon took ninth in the discus with a toss of 44.87 meters. In the sprint events, the 4x100-meter relay team of Ackeem Smith, Andre Walsh, Damian Miles and Nyls Nubret took second place.
The Hawks will compete in the Towson Invitational March 24 to continue its outdoor season. The all day meet will take place in Towson, Maryland.
