UMES OPENS OUTDOOR TRACK SEASON AT WAKE FOREST

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --The University of Maryland Eastern Shore opened its 2013 Outdoor Track and Field season at the Wake Forest Open. Hosted in Winston-Salem, N.C., and on the campus of Wake Forest University, the Hawks had a strong showing from both teams.
Imani Cox, Geranda Williams, Gayon Evans and Petra Kubesova finished with top five performances in their respective events in the Wake Forest Open March 13-16. Cox won gold in the shot put with a distance of 15.42 meters, and earned a fourth place finish with her discus throw of 42.30 meters.
Geranda Williams finished with silver in the triple jump with a distance of 12.25 meters, while Evans and Kubesova earned fifth place finishes in running events. Evans ran a 56.27-second time in the 400-meter dash. Kubesova finished the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:39.49.
Teammates Lexia Robinson and Nancy Yao each finished in the top 10 of their respective event field. Robinson took seventh place in both the discus and javelin throw. In the javelin she threw a distance of 40.29 meters, while tossing a 40.77-meter distance in the discus.
Yao finished ninth in the triple jump with a 11.22-meter finish for the Hawks. On the men's side, Denvil Ruan, Devin Wynn, Ackeem Smith, Javon Spencer, Marcus Wallace and Aaron Chatman all finished in the top five of their events.
Ruan placed second, earning silver, in the triple jump with a distance of 14.58 meters. Teammate Wynn also finished, in fourth place, with a 14.29-meter jump in the same event. Ackeem Smith finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.28 seconds.
Spencer led the group of Hawks in the 200-meter dash. He finished in fourth place with a time of 21.41 seconds, and was followed up by Wallace with a fifth-place 21.56-second finish. Chatman took second in the 400-meter dash with his time of 47.80 seconds.
UMES will travel to William & Mary for its next competition. Events will take place March 23 in Williamsburg, Virginia.
