WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Celia Whyte (Manchester, Jamaica) and junior Allodin Fothergill (New Hempstead, N.Y.) won the 800- and 400-meter events for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field teams on the first day of competition at the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium Friday.
Whyte led a group of five Lady Hawks who qualified for MEAC championships for the 800 in the season-opening meet. She finished first in 2:11.20, while Fothergill, who qualified to run the 400 meters at the conference championship, paced the field in that event in 47.26.
Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) ran fourth in the 800 in 2:11.98, followed by Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.), who was eighth in 2:13.87. Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) and Tamica Thomas (Saint Catherine, Jamaica) rounded the UMES MEAC championships qualifiers in 2:17.53 and 2:18.21, respectively.
The duo of freshman Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) and senior Saisha Woodward (Atlanta, Ga.) made some noise in the shot put. Henry took second with a mark of 14.17 and Woodward finished fourth with a toss of 13.76.
The Lady Hawks' quarter-milers had a solid day as well. Danai Lendor (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Monique Hawkins (Randallstown, Md.) crossed in fifth and sixth in times of 56.99 and 57.03.
On the men's side, Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya) clocked in third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:36.22.
Jamahl Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas) finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.92 meters.
In addition to Fothergill's win in the 400, three more Hawks finished in the top 30 in the race. Paul Jones-Burden (Rahway, N.J.) was 20th in 49.45, Corey Alexander (Orange, N.J.) was 28th in 49.88 and Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C) ran 49.90 to take 29th place.
Action resumes at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the women's javelin. The first running event, the 100 and 110-meter hurdle finals will begin at noon. Live results of the day's events are available at www.flashresults.com. |
