WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Allodin Fothergill (New Hempstead, N.Y) won the 200-meter dash for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field team on the final day at the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium Saturday.
The 2008 Beijing Olympian for Jamaica topped the competition in 21.23 to win his second event of the two-day meet. Fothergill was coming off of a victory in the 400 meters a day earlier.
For the second consecutive day, UMES had several student-athletes qualify for MEAC championships in their respective events. All five Lady Hawks entered in the 1,500 meters are headed to the conference championships. Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) led that group, finishing eighth in a time of 4:36.69.
Celia Whyte (Manchester, Jamaica) followed in 14th with a personal best of 4:44.91. Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) was 18th in the event with a personal-best time of her own in 4:47.95. Tamica Thomas (Saint Catherine, Jamaica) and Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) both also qualified from the 22nd and 46th spots in times of 4:51.24 and 5:02.68.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of James, Monique Hawkins (Randallstown, Md.), Danai Lendor (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Anais was fourth in that event and claimed a place at the conference championship in 3:48.85.
Hawkins and Lendor had solid performances in a pair of individual events as well. Lendor was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.74, while Hawkins took 11th in the 200, crossing in 25.66.
Saisha Woodward (Atlanta, Ga.) made an impact again in the throwing pit on Saturday. She finished fifth in the javelin with a mark of 41.34 meters and 20th in the discus with a toss of 35.95.
Jamahl Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas) finished seventh in the men's pole vault with a jump of 4.00 meters.
Next up for the UMES track and field teams is the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. March 27-28. |
