UMES OPENS OUTDOOR SEASON WITH SUCCESSFUL 49ER CLASSIC

CHARLOTTE, NC - Fresh off of an impressive indoor season which saw numerous school and personal records fall, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) track & field teams wasted no time getting into the outdoor action. The Hawks traveled to Charlotte, NC to participate in the 49er Classic on March 18-19 and performed well amongst the field of 40 teams.
On the men's side, sophomore Dwayne Robinson set a school mark in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14:29. Robinson, the UMES indoor record holder in the 60m hurdles, also competed in the javelin throw and took 12th with a throw of 47.78m (156-09 feet).
Sophomore Kimani Kirton, the 2005 MEAC indoor shot put champion, had another impressive outing as he took 2nd and 3rd in the shot put and discus, respectively. Barnabas Togom took 5th in the 5000 meter run in 15:01.98, while freshman Clayton James was successful in the 800m run, finishing his event in 1:54.25.
The women's team also competed strong at the 49er Classic, as sophomore Eva Slavikova took home her first individual title of the early season, finishing the 5000m run in 17:35.63. Pavla Zavoralova competed in several different events and had impressive outings in each of them, including a 4:54.08 finish in the 1500m run and a 9th place finish in the javelin throw.
Sherita Harriott, in her first outdoor season with UMES, took 12th in the javelin and cleared a jump of 5.09m (16-08.50 feet) in the long jump.
The women's 4x100 meter relay team clocked in at 48.34 while the men's 4x400m relay team took first in their heat, finishing in 3:17.87.
UMES will participate in the Aggie Relays in their next invite, traveling to Greensboro, NC on March 25-26.
