NORFOLK, VA. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's track and field team posted multiple first place finishes at Norfolk State's Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, March 24.

Clayton James, Peter Sang and Kimani Kirton each paced the Hawks with first place finishes in their respective events. James won the 1500m run in 4:02.63 while Sang led a 1-2-6 UMES finish in the 3000m steeplechase. Sang took first in 9:46.46 with Christopher Havrilla and Jerome Pyuzza finishing second and sixth in 10:14.70 and 12:01.66, respectively. Kirton went on to win the men's discus with a throw of 49.48m (162'4").

Freshman James Moore was the runner up in the high jump after leaping 2.09m (6'9") while junior Jason Daley posted second in the long jump but was first among collegiate competitors with a leap of 7.22m (23'7").

Senior Ronnie Beard took home a bronze metal in both the 110m hurdles (14.97 seconds) and the triple jump (13.65m or 44'8") while Brandon Eaton finished close behind Daley and Beard in both the long and triple jump. The Baltimore native posted a fourth place finish in the former after leaping 7.07m (23'2") and 13.28m (43'6"), good enough for a fifth place finish, in the latter.

Jeremiah Hicks and Charles Elmer each grabbed points for the Hawks after finishing sixth and seventh respectively in the long jump while Matthew Broyles got on the board in two throwing events, placing sixth in the discus (38.93m or 127'7") and ninth in the shot put (11.15m or 36'6"). Solomon Kirongo went on to take eighth in the javelin with a hurl of 35.80m (117'5").

 

 

The squad will return to action this weekend at the Maryland Invitational on March 31 in College Park, Md.
