CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Christopher Dawkins won the men's 400m run and two Hawks qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship at the Charlotte Invitational, hosted by UNC Charlotte, on March 31. Dawkins won his first event of the year when he crossed the line with a new personal record of 47.66 seconds. William McCullough took fifth in the same event in 49.87 while Kendell Quashie was ninth in 50.88. Kimani Kirton and Danieth Pryce each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship with outstanding performances in the men's shot put and the women's 100m dash. Kirton won his event with a throw of 17.24m (56-06.75 feet) while Pryce took third in her event after crossing the line in 11.74 seconds. Senior Dionne Wright won the women's shot put with a throw of 13.71m (44-11.75 feet) and also took fifth in the discus (38.72m or 127 feet) while Sherita Harriott was the runner up in the women's javelin (40.85m or 134 feet). Harriott also placed sixth in the long jump after leaping 5.43m (17-09.75 feet). On the track, freshman Merrecia James won the 1500m run in 4:39.64 while Betty Chumbe was the runner up in the 5000m run in 18.34.44. Tanisha Wisdom had good outings in several events after taking second in the 400m dash and third in the 200m dash. The junior finished those events in 54.84 and 24.29, respectively. Pryce was not far behind Wisdom in the 200m after taking placing fourth with the same time.
The Fighting Hawks saw freshman James Moore win gold in the high jump with his leap of 2.02m (6-07.50 feet). Teammate Jamahl Strachan was second in the same event after leaping 1.85m (6-00.75 feet). In other field events, Jason Daley led a 3-4-6 Hawk finish in the long jump. Daley grabbed third place after leaping 7.16m (23-06.00 feet) while Jeremiah Hicks and Brandon Eaton finished tied for fourth with leaps of 7.00m (22-11.75 feet). Charles Elmer rounded out the event after jumping 6.95m (22-11.75 feet). Eaton went on to place fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.08m (46-02.50 feet) while freshman Matthew Broyles had a good outing in the discus, taking fifth with a throw of 42.00m (137-09 feet). Senior Ronnie Beard took home silver medals in a pair of races, the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles, after finishing those events in 14.41 and 52.76 respectively. Dwayne Robinson took fourth in the former after crossing the line in 14.87 seconds. Freshman Peter Sang was the runner up in the 3000m steeplechase after finishing his event in 9:30.52. Clayton James took sixth in the 800m run in 1:53.35 while Chris Havrilla finished 11th in the same event in 1:56.04. The Hawks are off for two weeks, next returning to action on April 5 at the Lou Onesty/Milton Abramson Invite in Charlottesville, Va. |
