April 11, 2005 NORFOLK, VA - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) track and field team dominated the competition at the Norfolk Relays on Saturday, April 9, bringing home nine individual titles and 30 top five finishes on the day. On the women's side, senior Evelynn Mendoza won her first event of the season as she took home first place honors in the 800m run. Pavla Zavoralova followed her with a second place finish while Kathare Mudit took fourth in 2:38. The Lady Hawks swept the top two spots in the 100m dash, as Shakira Robinson and Chantelle Ringgold finished first and second, respectively. Later in the day, Ringgold took first in the 200m dash while sophomore Eva Slavikova won the 1500m run in 5:03. In the field events, Sherita Harriott led a 1-2-5 finish in the javelin, taking first with a throw of 36.08 meters while Zavoralova and Nicole McKenzie finished second and fifth. Senior Tiwana Smith took home top three finishes in both the discus and shot put, while Candice Ringgold finished as runner up in the pole fault. On the men's side, Barnabas Togom took home an individual title in the 1500m run, finishing the event in 4:05. UMES took the top two spots in the steeplechase, as Frederick Keter and Chris Havrilla finished first and second, respectively. Sophomore Ronnie Beard was impressive in the hurdles, taking second in the 100m H and third in the 400m H, while teammates Justin Head and Jeffrey Meyers rounded out the top five for the Hawks in the latter event, finishing fourth and fifth.
Duran Smith took second in the 100m dash and led a 2-6-7 finish in the event, as Markeith Eldridge-Scott and Gareth Burrowes followed with sixth and seventh place finishes. Freshman Clayton James took fourth in the 800m dash while Havrilla got on board with a seventh place finish. Kimani Kirton was strong in the field events, taking first in the shot put and second in the discus, while Dwayne Robinson finished first among collegiate competitors in the javelin. Junior Bryan Ingram rounded out the field events for the Hawks as he took fifth in the shot put. The teams are off until April 15, next traveling to Virginia to participate in the Lou Onesty/Milton Abramson Invitational. |
