PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --The University of Maryland Eastern Shore participated in the George Mason Invitational over the past weekend, and had 12 top 10 finishes. Of the 37 teams competing, UMES had several first, second and third place finishes. Gayon Evans set a school record in the 200-meter dash, and a season's best finish in the 100-meter dash event. Evans ran a time of 23.43 in the 200m to set the new school mark.

Evans finished fifth in the 100m preliminary, but finished in a speedy 11.55 seconds to win gold in the event. Teammate Marcus Wallace finished fourth in the 100m with a 10.70-second time. Ackeem Smith ran a 14.04-second time in the 110-meter hurdles to finish in second place.

Evans won the 200m while setting the new UMES record. Wallace ran in the 200m on the men's side, finishing in a time of 21.54 seconds. In the last sprint events, Lenora Guion-Firmin finished first in the 400m dash, while Javon Spencer finished in the top 10 of the event.

Guion-Firmin posted a 53.43-second finish for the Hawks, while Spencer ran a 48.82. Distance runner, Petra Kubesova, ran a personal best 17:19.71 in the 5,000-meter run. Of the two UMES teams, only the women's 4x400-meter relay team ran at George Mason.

Jennell Wade led the Hawks run, and was assisted by Evans, Melina Gallas and Guion-Firmin. The team ran a second-place finish time of 3:46.87.The field events were equally successful for the Hawks.

Imani Cox earned gold in the shot put with a toss of 15.84 meters. She finished seventh in the discus with a throw of 42.35 meters. Teammate Dillon Simon finished in second place with a 49.16-meter throw in the discus. The distance is also a personal record for Cox. Lexia Robinson finished ninth in the javelin, throwing a distance of 36.91 meters.

 

 

Denvil Ruan and Geranda Williams finished 12th and 13th, respectively, in the long jump. Ruan finished with a distance of 6.49 meters, while Williams leapt to a distance of 5.33 meters.

Williams finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.36 meters. Devin Wynn finished with a 14.09-meter distance in the triple jump, and 11th place finish.

UMES will return to compete April 20 at Morgan State University. The Morgan Legacy meet will take place all day on Saturday.
