Hawks Begin Preperations for Penn Relays and MEAC Championships with meet at UVA

Charlottesville, VA - The UMES Men's and Women's Track and Field teams prepare for Championships as times begin to drop and improvement shows. Damion Drummond dropped his time from 151:74 at the Duke Inivitiational to 1:50.61, placing above all other MEAC competitors who ran the 800m Run. Ronnie Beard ran well in the 110m Hurdles, palcing 6th overall, with a time of 14.85. As Joseph Hylton prepares to regain his MEAC gold medal in the High Jump, he placed 2nd overall among several competitors. Freshen, Duran Smith jumped 6.28m in the Long Jump and Kimani Kirton placed 3rd overall in the Shot Put and Discuss, as they both prepare to place among the best in the MEAC at Championships.

For the Lady Hawks, Alyssa Walker had excellent performances. She placed 2nd overall in the 400m Dash, with a season's best time of 55.47. She also placed 2nd in the 400m Hurdles, running 1:03.05. UMES' 800m runners also ran well, in hopes to place among the top competition at MEAC Championships. Deborah Meadows ran 2:14.86, placing 8th, Evelynn Mendoza, 2:17.17 and Kori Barrett, 2:18.62. Shakira Robinson placed 6th in the 100m dash (12.35) and 8th in the 200m Dash (25.01). She was also a member of the women's 4X100m Relay team (Kelly Ann Lue, Shakira Robinson, Eboni Reavis, Alyssa Walker) that placed 2nd overall, running 47.24. The Women's 4X400m Relay also placed 4th overall. In the field Petagay O'Conner performed well, winning the Triple Jump (11.99m) and placing 4th in the Long Jump with a season's best of 5.71m. Tiwana Smith also competed well in the field, placing 4th overall, throwing 12.35m in the Shot Put. She also placed 6th in the Discuss Throw (36.21m).

 

 

Of 17 teams competing in the meet, the Lady Hawks placed 4th overall, and the Hawks placed 7th of 20 teams overall. Head Coach Ernest Barrett looks forward to more good performances at Morgan State University on April 17, 2004 at the Morgan State University Legacy Track Meet.
