Baltimore, MD - At the Morgan State Invitational two Lady Hawks appeared in the finals of the 100-meter dash with Shakira Robinson and Candace Frederick taking sixth and seventh place respectively. 300 meters more, (the 400 meter dash) saw Evelynn Mendoza and Schachia Murphy cross the line in the fifth and seventh positions. Debbie Meadows took no prisoners in the 800 meter run, crossing the line first, eight tenths of a second before the next competitor. In the 400-meter hurdles the Lady Hawks were consistent, taking fourth and ninth places with Alyssa Walker and Kori Barett. Even the Lady Hawk's 4 x 100 relay teams were dominant, finishing second and third. They took fourth in the 4 x 400 relay as well. In field events the Lady Hawks took three of the top five places in the pole vault, grabbing second (Eboni Reavis), third (Candice Ringgold), and fifth (Alyssa Walker).
On the men's side Damion Drummond blisters the track crossing first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:50.68. Not to be outdone sophomore sensation Barnabas Togom won his event, the 1500 meters (3:55.48) a whole second ahead of the next place finisher. Just for good measure Togom ran the 5000-meter run, finishing second, just .07 seconds behind the winner. In that event fellow Hawk Frederick Keter also took fifth. In the 400-meter hurdles Ronnie Beard snagged a top ten finish, crossing in ninth place. Assistant Coach Javid Brathwaite showed him how it was done as he ran unattached for a fourth place finish. The 4 x 400 meter relay team took fourth place, as did Jospeh Hylton in the high jump.
UMES is off to the Penn Relays next week to continue building and preparing for MEAC Championships at the end of the month. |
