Lake Buena Vista, FL - Norfolk State's men and women lead after the first day of competition at the 2004 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

The Spartan men were led by sophomore Patrick Scott who finished first in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:36.28. Norfolk State's Cleophus Koros and Duncan Bitok finished in second and seventh giving the Spartans a 20-point first day output.

Following in second, Howard ended with 11 points led by Jonathan Davis (9:45.27) and Gerald Bright (9:48.36) finishing in third and fourth place in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

Demetrius Westbrooks of Norfolk State leads the decathletes with 3,652 points after five events. Alan Mitchell of Morgan State finished second with 3,548 points while Hampton's John Bailey finished third (3,381).

On the women's side, Denisha Hudson and Linah Tallam of Norfolk State finished with second and third place finishes in the 5000 meter run and combined for 14 team points.

Maryland-Eastern Shore trails close behind with 10 team points after a first place 5000 meter run finish by freshman Eva Slavikova with a time of 18:32.78.

Kellie Wells of Hampton leads the women's heptathlon with 3,006 points after four events. Florida A&M's Cicely Patterson (2,945) and Lavonne Idlette of Hampton (2,903) round out the top three in the heptathlon.

The final day of heptathlon and decathlon competition will begin on Friday, April 30 with women's long jump and javelin at 9:00 a.m. and men's 110 high hurdles and discus beginning at 9:15 a.m.
