GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore senior Jamahl Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas) and freshman Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.) are fifth and seventh, respectively, after day one of the decathlon at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Irwin Belk Track.
Strachan scored 3,236 points on the day and is just 22 points behind Delaware State's Darius Sivels in fourth. Dix tallied 3,121 points, 27 points in back of Leighton Brown of South Carolina State for sixth. Darris Shelton of Norfolk State leads the competition with 3,609 points.
Strachan captured the high jump, the fourth of five events on the day, with a leap of 1.97 meters (six feet, 5.5 inches) to earn 776 points.
Strachan also finished fifth (long jump), eighth (400 meters), ninth (shot put) and 11th (100 meters) on day one.
Dix placed sixth in all five events. He earned his most points in the 100 with 746 in a time of 11.53. Dix also took 745 points in the 400 meters, finishing that event in 51.54.
The MEAC Championships continue Friday with the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon events as well as several more field events. The afternoon marks the start of track portion of the competition with the 100, 200 and 400 meters, among others.
