Lake Buena Vista, FL - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men and women's track and field teams had some outstanding performances at the 2004 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships. The Lady Hawks came home in fourth place while the men took an eighth place finish. The field events were strong for UMES as Kimani Kirton took the gold medal (16.31 meters) in the shot put and the silver in the discuss (44.90 meters). His shot put throw was 1.34 meters further than the next competitor. Also in the field events Ronnie Beard took home eighth in the triple jump for a top ten performance. Joseph Hylton was fourth in the high jump. On the Lady Hawk's side the field events were again strong with Eboni Reavis and Alyssa Walker taking home top ten performances in the pole vault with seventh and eighth place respectively. Kelly Ann Lue was strong in the long jump, leaping her way to a sixth place finish. Petagay O'Connor was also strong, snatching a second place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 12.60 meters. Tiwana Smith threw well in the field, recording a fourth place finish in the shot put and 11th in the discuss. Volleyball standout Sanda Dzile threw the javelin for the Lady Hawks and was impressive, throwing third with a distance of 34.86 meters. In the multiple events competition, senior Eboni Reavis took seventh place in the women's heptathlon and was followed by O'Connor in tenth.
On the track side Shakira Robinson took eighth in the 100-meter dash finals while also grabbing sixth in the 200 meter dash. The Lady Hawks got more points from Alyssa Walker who took sixth in the 400 meter dash finals and second in the 400 meter hurdles. Evelynn Mendoza won the 800-meter dash while Deborah Meadows took eighth. Day one saw UMES freshman Eva Slavikova win the 5000 meter run. She liked the gold medal so much that she wanted another, and won the 1500-meter run on the final day with a time of 4:43.57.
In the team events the Lady Hawk team of Lue, Robinson, Chantelle Ringgold and Candice Frederick crossed the line fourth in the 4 x 100 meter relay while Mendoza, Walker, Meadows, and Kori Barrett took sixth in the 4 x 400 meter relay. The men also took sixth in that event with the team of Beard, Alex Edwards, Damion Drummond and Gareth Burrowes. In the men's 45 x 100 the team of Beard, Edwards, Duran Smith, and Markeith Eldridge-Scott took eighth place. Smith took a top ten in the 200 meter dash with a ninth place finish, while Drummond was unable to defend his 800 meter crown, finishing third with a time of 1:50.40. Drummond then teamed with Barnabas Togom to take sixth and seventh place respectively in the 1500 meter run. Togom had a strong showing in the 5000 meters as well, scoring for UMES with a second place time of 15:17.64. Beard was strong in the 110-meter hurdles, grabbing fourth with a 14.64 mark. Frederick Keter had a good showing the 3000-meter steeplechase, coming home in sixth. The following story is taken from www.meacsports.com Hampton University's women's track and field team won their third straight MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Title outdistancing their closest opponent by 57 points. The Hampton men took a share of the Men's Championship, splitting the trophy with Florida A&M, who captured their ninth overall title.
Hampton women dominated with 151 points led by juniors Kellie Wells and Maisha Pinkard who finished with 24 points apiece. Pinkard finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.93, while Wells finished first in both the 100-meter hurdles (13.77) and the heptathlon (4,690). Senior Chloe Davis (Hampton) finished first with a time of 59.12 in the 400-meter hurdles, and second in the 100 meters (14.01).
Kevin Hicks, the Championship's Outstanding Performer, led the Rattlers with 22.50 individual points. Hicks earned three first place finishes including the 800-meter run (1:49.41), 1500 meter run (3:55.33), and a first leg contribution in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:09.38.
Jerome Mathis of Hampton followed close behind with 21.50 individual points to lead the Pirates. Mathis finished with a first place 100 meter finish (10.71), third place performance in the high jump (2.03m), and a fifth place long jump effort of 7.24 meters.
Norfolk State finished second in both the men and women's competition with 81 points (men) and 94 points (women).
Ashley Horn of Morgan State earned 2004 MEAC Outstanding Performer honors with first place finishes in the shot put (13.66m) and javelin throw (39.98m). Horn ended the championship with 28 individual points. |
