GREENSBORO, N.C. - Official release appears compliments of MEAC Media Relations. Morgan State's Herbert Nicholls (400m), Terrance Burton of Hampton (400m), Howard's Lauren McNary (400m) and UMES' Tanesha Wisdom (400m) all qualified for the NCAA East Regional on the first day of competition at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships held on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C. Nicholls ran his fastest time of the season at 46.78 in the 400m dash preliminaries and finished first in the event. Burton, who already qualified in the event improved upon his time and finished second with a time of 46.79. McNary who had qualified in the 400m three weeks ago, bettered her time of 54.04 and finished first with a season best time of 53.47. Tanesha Wisdom of UMES' was second behind McNary and qualified with her time of 53.67. The finals for all four events will take place on Friday. UMES' women are in first place in the team standings with 29 points after two events scored. Norfolk State is second with 13 points, while Hampton is in third place with 12 points. Bethune-Cookman is fourth with 11 points, and the reigning MEAC Outdoor Champions of Morgan State round out the top five with six points. One the men's side, Norfolk State, winners of both the 2005 MEAC Cross Country and 2006 MEAC Indoor titles have the lead after day one with 20 points. Coppin State is second with 16 points, followed by UMES with 15 points. Morgan State is fourth with eight points and Bethune-Cookman is fifth with five points. During day one of competition, four athletes earned gold medals. UMES' Dionne Wright won the javelin with a 41.82m mark, while teammate Janeth Chelangat took home the gold in the 5,000m with a time of 18:28.85. David Kemboi of Norfolk State won the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:34.51 and Coppin State's Arlon Mitchell won the javelin with a 53.86m toss.
Cuquie Melville of Delaware State leads the women's heptathlon after four events with 2,979 points. Melville finished first in the 200m (25.83), fourth in the 100m hurdles (14.84), tied for third in the high jump with a 1.63m leap and was third in the shot put (10.06m). Hampton's Lavonne Idlette is in second place with 2,934 points. Idlette lead throughout three events but lost the lead in the last event of day one. Kelsi Russell of Morgan State is in third with 2,875, followed by UMES' Sherita Harriott (2870) and Coppin State's Natoya Baird (2854). The event will conclude tomorrow with the long jump, javelin throw and 800m events. Bethune-Cookman's Harold Rose has the day one lead after five events in the men's decathlon with 3,480 points. Rose was in second place after two events. He took the lead with a second place finish in the shot put (10.80m) and maintained the lead with a 1.89m mark in the high jump, and a 53.10 time in the 400m. Brandon Miles of Coppin State is in second place with 3,388. Hampton had three athletes round out the top five after day one. Barry Bostick was third with 3,333 points, followed by Desmond Shipp (3,169) and Christian Siegmund (3153). The decathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 110m hurdles, discus throws, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500m events. The MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will resume on Friday, May 5 at 9 a.m., with the women's heptathlon.
