GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships began Thursday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's team is currently third with four points while the women are in fourth with three points.

Two events were completed on the day, the men's and women's 5000 meter run. Additionally, the first half of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon took place.

Sophomore Basil Melek (Grand Prairie, Texas) placed fifth in the 5000m with a time of 15:38.72 and earned three points for the Hawks. Junior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) scored one point with his eighth place finish time of 16:07.40.

Senior Tamica Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamaica) was the sole Lady Hawk to compete in the 5000m and finished with a sixth place finish and three points in 19:21.43.

In the men's decathlon, freshman David Sandiford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.) are currently third (3249 points) and fourth (3216 points), respectively. Events that were completed on Thursday include the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash.

Freshman Seneman Pollock (Waldorf, Md.) is currently 10th in the women's heptathlon with 2701 points after Thursday's events. She competed in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash.

Action in the decathlon and heptathlon resumes Friday in addition to the men's and women's long jump, the women's shot put, women's pole vault, men's discus and men's high jump.

Friday afternoon continues on the track with the men's 110-meter hurdles and the women's 100-meter hurdles beginning at 1:50 p.m. Other track events include the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and 400-meter hurdles.
