GREENSBORO, N.C. - UMES qualified five more for NCAA Regionals as the Lady Hawks finished as the runner up for the title at the 2006 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Danieth Pryce (100m), Tanesha Wisdom (200m, 400m), Janeth Chelangat (5000m), Dionne Wright (shot put, javelin) and Dwayne Robinson (110m hurdles) all qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships, which will be held on the campus of North Carolina A&T in late May.

Wright set a new MEAC, UMES and personal record in the shot put. The junior from Manchester, Jamaica won the event with a 14.63m (48 feet) toss surpassing the former record of 14.22m. Wright also set a new outdoor school record in the discus with her second place throw of 41.54m (136.3 feet) and took home a gold medal with her first place finish in the javelin (41.82m or 137.2 feet).

Freshman Janeth Chelangat qualified for the NCAA East Regional with her first place mark in the 5000m run (18:28.85). Danieth Pryce will join her in the Regional as she took third in the 100m run in 11.62.

Wisdom, who already qualified for the Regional earlier this season in the 400m run, improved on her pr in that event and set a new school record with her second place finish in 53.44. She also brought home a silver medal in the 200m dash and set a new personal mark with her Regional qualifying time of 23.67.

 

 

The women's 4x100m relay team of Shakira Robinson, Pryce, Wisdom and Cierra Layne took first in 45.32 and will also head to the East Regional.

Dwayne Robinson, who earned an at-large bid to the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, qualified for the Regional in the 110m hurdles with his third place mark in 13.95. Ronnie Beard took fourth in the same event in 14.22 and will join Robinson at the Regional after qualifying earlier this season.

Alfred Singoei brought home a silver medal with his second place finish in the 5000m run (15:20.21). Teammate Geoffrey Rutto was not far behind with his sixth place finish in 16:13.70. Singoei took home a bronze medal in the 1500m (3:59.88) while Rutto grabbed four points for UMES with his fifth place finish in the 3000m steeplechase (10:10.38).

In field events, freshman Jamahl Strachan brought home a bronze medal with his third place finish in the high jump (2.0m or 6.6 feet). Strachan also took eighth in the pole vault (3.95m or 13 feet) and set a new UMES mark in that event.

Senior Christopher Morrison was third in the javelin (52.15m or 171.1 feet) while Jason Daley was not too far behind with his fourth place toss of 50.44m (165.5 feet). Daley also placed in the triple jump with his eighth place leap of 14.61m (47.9 feet) while Morrison grabbed four team points for the Hawks with his fifth place finish in the high jump (1.95m or 6.4 feet).

The men's 4x100m relay squad of Brandon Eaton, Daley, Beard and William McCullough brought home two team points for UMES with their seventh place finish in 41.9. The women's 4x400m team of Sherie Brown, Wisdom, Ariana Forbes and Pryce, meanwhile, also placed seventh (3:47.88).

Forbes (100m hurdles) did not place in her respective event but did finish with a personal mark (14.27). Sherita Harriott, the school record holder in the javelin, set a new UMES record in the heptathlon when she won the event with 4,894 points. Harriott was in fourth place after day one and took the lead on Day 2 with first place finishes in both the long jump (5.76m) and javelin events (38.69m).

The Hawks are off for one week, next traveling to Atlanta, Georgia May 12-13 for the Georgia Tech Invitational.
