May 28, 2006 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Women's 4 x 100 Meter Relay team ran a time of 44.61 to earn a birth in Saturday's finals at the 2006 NCAA East Regional Track & Field Meet with a shot at competing in the NCAA National Championships on the line. The team took seventh in the finals on Saturday, setting a new school record, but failing to automatically qualify for the National Championship meet in Sacramento, Calif. "They ran really well," said Head Coach Ernest Barrett. "It is quite an accomplishment to make the field for the team and also for our program to have so many athletes qualify to compete here." In all the Hawks took eight athletes to the meet competing in eight different events. Four of those eight, Danieth Pryce, Tanesha Wisdom, Shakira Robinson and Cierra Layne made up the 4 x 100 team. Pryce and Wisdom also competed in individual events with Pryce running in the 100 and 200 meter dashes and Wisdom competing in the 200 meter and 400 meter dashes. The 4 x 100 meter relay team was the only Hawk entry to advance to Saturday's finals. Also competing were several MEAC Champions for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Janeth Chelangat, the MEAC 5000 meter winner ran in the same event at NCAA East Regionals. Dionne Wright, the MEAC Champion, threw the shot put in the regionals as well. The Fighting Hawks were also represented with Dwayne Robinson and Ronnie Beard. Beard, ran in the 110 meter hurdles where he took third in his heat, matching his qualifying time of 14.03. Beard also competed in the 400 meter hurdles, this time taking second in his heat with a time of 51.76, 52 tenths of a second slower than his qualifying time.
Dwayne Robinson, who went to the NCAA Championships last season, failed to qualify this year in the 110 meter hurdles. The Hawks now await possible at-large bids for the National Championships. "We have had a great season," said Barrett. "Both our men and women made some great strides and have kept us making progress, getting better and better each mee |
