BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With his strongest performance of the season, Ackeem Smith has qualified to run the 110-meter hurdles semifinal round in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Des Moines, Iowa.

Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) ran the 110-meter hurdles quarterfinal in 13.90 seconds on Saturday, a season best earning him 12th place and a spot in the semifinal round.

This will be his first time in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Smith's semifinal round is set to take place at 7:10 p.m. on Thursday, June 9th at the Jim Duncan Track at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. He will compete alongside the other 23 qualifiers from the East and West Regions.

Saturday also saw the completion of relay competition. UMES ran two relay teams, one on each the men's and women's side.

In the women's 4x400-meter relay, the team of Emilie Ducados (Paris, France), Melina Gallas (Paris, France), Monique Hawkins (Randallstown, Md.) and Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) had a strong showing with a finish of 3:43.42 for 24th place.

UMES also competed in the men's 4x100-meter relay, however the team of Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.), Andre Walsh (St. Catherine, Jamaica), Damian Miles (Teaneck, N.J.) and Nyls Nubret (St. Francois, Guadeloupe) did not finish.

This is the seventh straight season UMES will send a participant to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship.
