Gainesville, FL - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting and Lady Hawk's Outdoor Track & Field season came to an end last weekend as four Hawks had outstanding performances but fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Austin, TX. Damion Drummond, a senior running in his last regional championships left it all on the track, taking second place in his qualifying heat with a time of 1:49.29. That time was good enough for the finals where he ran 1:49.49, seventh place overall but fell just shy of the qualifying time by 1.23 seconds. There is still a possibility that he will make the Championships with an at large bid. The other Fighting Hawk was competing in his first regional championship. Freshman shot putter Kimani Kirton was sixth in his flight with a throw of 16.54 meters. That throw placed him 15th overall, a very respectable finish for someone who will have three more years of NCAA regionals. On the women's side, another freshman that will get three more chances is triple jumper Petagay O'Connor. O'Connor jumped 12.34 meters, taking fifth in her flight. That distance put her in 16th place overall. The final Lady Hawk to qualify, Alyssa Walker had a solid showing. Taking third place in her 400 meter hurdle heat with a time of 59.72, Walker took a 13th place overall finish, topping competitors from Virginia, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and several MEAC schools.
UMES had an outstanding season in track and field, and while Drummond may make the NCAA Championships, the rest of the team will look forward to next season, beginning with cross-country in September.
