PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This week’s Hawk Talk edition features UMES Athletes of the Week, baseball postpones MEAC series, women’s basketball top moments, softball receives conference preseason honors, student-athletes win awards, weekly results, and more.

Let’s go:

BASEBALL

Last Monday (03/31), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team postponed their three-game series against Delaware State University (DSU) due to inclement weather. At this time, no make-up date for the series has been determined.

Last Wednesday (04/02), Maryland Eastern Shore fell in non-conference action to the University of Maryland Baltimore-County (UMBC), 5-2. Sophomore Will Turley (Greensboro, Md.) threw three 3.1 innings with four hits and one earned run.

On April 5-6, the Hawks battled Coppin State University (CSU) in a three-game series at Hawk Stadium.

Last Saturday (04/05), the baseball team split their doubleheader against CSU by winning the first game, 9-1, before losing the nightcap, 14-3. Freshman Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) sparked the UMES offense in game one with a double in the second.

The following day (04/06), UMES fell to the Eagles, 4-3, in the series rubber match. Junior Greg Turlik (above) led the Hawks with a pair of RBI singles in the loss.

Tomorrow (04/08), the Hawks host Navy at Hawks Stadium before traveling to Annapolis, Md. to face the Midshipmen. Both contests are single nine-inning games and first-pitches are 3:00 p.m. (EST).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Last season, the Lady Hawks captured unforgettable moments and gave the UMES faithful hope as they look to compete for the MEAC Championship next season. On April 3rd, senior Shanyce Stewart (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) won the Award of Excellence in the department of technology at the university's 61st annual Honors Convocation.

Maryland Eastern Shore returns 13 players, including the team’s top two scorers, Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) and Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.).

BOWLING

Last Thursday (04/03), senior Megan Buja (Rockford, Ill.) and junior Tatiana Munoz (Ibague Tolima, Columbia) received recognition at the university's 61st annual Honors Convocation, located in the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Preforming Arts.

Munoz earned the Award of Excellence as the top student in the School of Pharmacy & Health Professions while Buja was singled out for departmental honors from the department of Human Ecology.

On April 10-12, the bowling team travels to Cleveland, Ohio to compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament. Times and match-ups are to be determined.

GOLF

Last Tuesday (04/01), the golf team concluded their first tournament of the season at the Whitling-Turner Towson Invitational as the Hawks claimed 21st overall in the event. Freshman Norman Blanco (New Orleans, La.) was top Hawk, finishing 41st overall, after scoring 81 on the first day and 75 on the second.

Two days later (04/03), senior Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) took home the Award of Excellence from the School of Business & Technology at the university's 61st annual Honors Convocation.

At the end of the month (04/25-04/27), the team heads to Savannah, Ga. to compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship.

SOFTBALL

On April 1st, the Lady Hawks fell to Coppin State in MEAC doubleheader, 4-0 and 11-3, respectively. Sophomore Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) notched her second three-plus hit game of the season after going 3-of-4 from the plate in Game One while senior Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) went a perfect 2-for-2 inside the batter’s box and scored twice in the Game Two.

The next day (04/02), MEAC announced its softball preseason honors and Gomez and junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) were selected to the 2014 MEAC Preseason All-Conference Second Team. Also, the conference revealed their 2014 MEAC Order of Finish Predictions and forecasted the Lady Hawks to finish seventh in the MEAC Northern Division.

On the same day (04/02), Maryland Eastern Shore was swept in their non-conference doubleheader matchup versus the University of Delaware (UD), 23-2 and 5-0, respectively. Sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) earned the lone RBI in the Game One loss whereas fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) threw five innings while allowing one run and four hits as a reliever in Game Two.

This past weekend (04/05-04/06), the Lady Hawks faced Norfolk State University (NSU) in a three-game series at Lady Hawks Field.

On April 5th, UMES split their conference doubleheader against NSU by winning the first contest, 6-3; however, falling short in the second game, 5-2. In Game One, Alston went 2-for-4 with two triples while freshman Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) batted 3-for-4 with a triple and run scored in the Game Two loss.

The next day (04/06), Maryland Eastern Shore lost the rubber match to the Spartans, 7-4. Sophomore Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) led the Hawk attack as she went 3-of-4 with two RBIs whereas Diseroad and Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) each registered multi-hit performances in a losing effort.

In 11 days (04/18-04/19), the Lady Hawks face Hampton University at Lady Pirates Softball Stadium. Saturday’s contests will be televised on ESPNU/ESPN3, starting at 1:00 p.m. (EST). Sunday’s single seven-inning game begins at noon (EST).

MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Last Monday (03/31), junior Dillon Simon (Potterville, Dominica) was named UMES Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) Athlete of the Week, alongside Gayon Evans (track & field), for his performance at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. Simon had two top-10 performances as he finished fifth in the discus throw (53.15 meters) and second in the shot-put (17.26 meters).

Last Thursday (04/03), senior Aaron Chatmon (Waldorf, Md.) earned the Award of Excellence in General Studies at the university's 61st annual Honors Convocation.

This Saturday (04/12), the squad competes in two separate events, located in Baltimore and Fairfax, Va. For more information, Click Here.

WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

On March 31st, junior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) earned UMES PRMC Athlete of the Week honors, along with Dillon Simon (track & field), for her performance at the Raleigh Relays. Evans qualified for the eight-person finals by placing first in the field of 157 student-athletes with a time of 11.56 seconds.
