May 4, 2006 PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) outdoor track and field team will look to finish strong in this weekend's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships on May 4-6. The Championships, held at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University (Greensboro, NC), will feature all 11 MEAC institutions. The Spartans of Norfolk State, winners of both the 2005 MEAC Cross Country and 2006 MEAC Indoor Track & Field titles, will try to earn the triple crown by winning their first outdoor championship since 2001. On the women's side, Hampton, the reigning indoor track & field champions will vie for their fourth title in five years. UMES' Ronnie Beard and Alfred Singoei are strong championships contenders. Beard has qualified for the NCAA Eastern Regional Championships in the 60m hurdles and owns the second highest MEAC time in that event (14.08). Singoei, meanwhile, owns the second highest conference time in the 5000m (15:22.41). He also ran a season's best 14:00.18 in the 3000m run, third highest in the MEAC. William McCullough is among the favorites in the 400m run and owns the fifth highest conference time in that event (47.93). Clayton James (800m run) and Geoffrey Rutto (3000m run) are also medal contenders. In field events, Jason Daley (long jump) owns the top MEAC finish and will contend for a title while Jamahl Strachan (high jump) and Christopher Morrison (high jump) are tied for the fifth-highest conference mark will vie for top finishes in their respective event. Tanesha Wisdom, Danieth Pryce and Janeth Chelangat are championship contenders on the women's side. Wisdom has qualified for the NCAA Eastern Regional Championships in the 200m dash and owns the second highest time in that event (54.09). Pryce has been hindered this season due to injury but still owns the third highest conference mark in the 100m dash (11.80). Chelangat, meanwhile, ran 18:27.74 in the 5000m run earlier this year, third highest in the MEAC. Sherita Harriott is among the favorites in several events. The senior from Trelawny, Jamaica owns two of the top conference marks in the high jump and long jump and is tops in the MEAC in the javelin (43.08 meters). Petagay O'Connor (triple jump) and Dionne Wright (throws) are also medal contenders. Twenty of the 35 MEAC outdoor individual and relay championships will be awarded on Saturday, May 6.
