PRINCESS ANNE, MD - University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES sophomore Kimani Kirton (St. Thomas, Jamaica/Kingston College) received national recognition on Monday, May 16, after a record setting performance at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday, May 13.

Kirton threw18.64 meters (61 feet, 2 inches), a school record, at Georgia Tech to place him 68th out of 80 on the 2005 IAAF World Rankings List. Kirton, the 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) indoor and outdoor shot put champion, has eclipsed the school record three times this season and set a new conference mark twice.

"Kimani has responded well to the training regime," said shot put coach Rohan Ferguson. "He is a very disciplined athlete and a pleasure to work with."

Kirton has qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in both the shot put and discus this season, his second consecutive year reaching the Eastern Regionals.

IAAF, the International Association of Athletics Federation, was founded in 1912 and governs several disciplines, including the World Championships, World Junior Championships, and the World Cross Country Championships. Fourteen multi-sport and Area Games competitions, including the Olympic Games, are organized by IAAF.

Kirton and six other Hawks will next head to NCAA Regional Competition in Randall's Island, New York, on May 27-28.
