UMES TRACK AND FIELD QUALIFIES 10 FOR NCAA PRELIMINARY ROUND

Princess Anne, Md. --The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Track and Field team qualified 10 student-athletes for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Preliminary Round (May 24-26) in Jacksonville, Florida. UMES had five members record nationally recognized top 10 times or distances in their respective events.
Lenora Guion-Firmin, Cynthia Anais, Vanessa Henry and Geranda Williams were named as qualifiers for the women's team. Guion-Firmin marked the fifth best time in the nation in the 400-meter dash with a 52.20-second finish, and earned a place in the UMES record books in the event.
Anais and Henry are ranked seventh in the nation in their events. Anais qualified for the 800-meter run, and set a UMES record with her time of 2:04.26. Henry is the current record holder following her NCAA prelim qualifying toss of 16.48 meters.
Williams will compete in the triple jump for UMES, and hopefully leap into the NCAA Championships (May 6-9). Williams qualified for prelim competition with her distance of 12.69 meters.
The Hawks' Ackeem Smith and Andre Walsh are ranked 10th in the country in two separate hurdle events. Smith sprinted to a 13.79-second finish in the 110-meter hurdles, while Walsh qualified with a 50.69-second time in the 400-meter hurdles. Both hold UMES records in their respective events.
Marcus Wallace and Zavior Brown qualified for the 200-meter dash and 800-meter run, respectively. Wallace sprint a 21.14 second finish, with Brown entering with a 1:49.53. Rico Taylor and Owen Cain qualified in the jumps events.
Taylor, a UMES record holder, will compete in the high jump. Taylor earned his place in the school record books following his 2.14-meter leap in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships.
Cain, also a school record holder, set the UMES record and qualified for the prelims with his 15.57-meter distance in the triple jump.
Qualifying student-athletes compete in the NCAA Championships May 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
