PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This week’s Memorial Day Hawk Talk edition features UMES Athletes of the Week, baseball news, basketball alumnus receives recognition, softball season review, weekly results, and more, including UMES Graduation.

BASEBALL

On May 13th, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its 2014 MEAC All-Academic Baseball Team and 10 University of Maryland Eastern (UMES) baseball student-athletes were selected. The recipients included: Dustin Aigner (Melfa, Va.), J.P. Black (Elkton, Md.), Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.), Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.), Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.), Nick Cooper (Delmar, Del.), James DiBuo (Bishopville, Md.), Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.), Joshua James (Milford, Del.) and Will Turley (Greensboro, Md.).

Last Monday (05/19), Bull was named UMES Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) Athlete of the Week, alongside Gayon Evans (track & field), for his performance at the MEAC Championships. In his final collegiate game, Bull went 3-of-4 against North Carolina Central University (NCCU).

Later that day (05/19), Bull was selected to the 2014 All-MEAC Tournament Team.

Two days later (05/21), Bull and fellow senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) were named to the 2014 College Sports Madness MEAC All-Conference Team.

The baseball team finished their 2014 campaign 13-35 overall (8-15 MEAC).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Former University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball player Tim Parham was recently named the 2013-14 National Basketball League (NBL) of Canada Center of the Year and was named to the All-NBC Second Team. He averaged 10.6 points-per-game (PPG) and brought down 10.8 rebounds-per-game (RPG).

The squad finished 6-24 overall (4-12 MEAC) and named Bobby Collins as new head coach on April 8th.

MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

On May 16-18, the men’s track & field team placed 14th-out-of-57 institutions at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J. The squad had several top finishes, including senior Ramone Waite (Kingston, Jamaica) earning fifth place in the 100-meter finals and fellow senior Aaron Chatman (Waldorf, Md.) also finishing fifth in the 400-meter dash.

The team will have a chance to compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) postseason tournament as they will participate in Eastern preliminary rounds, held in Jacksonville, Fla (May 29-31). Meet times will be released at a later date.

WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

On May 16-18, the women’s track & field team finished 15th-out-of-57 schools at the IC4A/ECAC Championships. Senior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) was the lone winner for the Lady Hawks as she won the 200-meter dash with a 23.23 time.

Last Monday (05/19), Evans received UMES PRMC Athlete of the Week, along with Stephen Bull (baseball), for her performance at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.

On May 29-31, the squad will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to participate in Eastern preliminary rounds for a chance to compete in the NCAA postseason tournament, held in Eugene, Ore. Meet times are to be determined.

SOFTBALL

The 2014 season was a true learning curve for the team as they face tough competition throughout the season. The squad showed their inexperience, but demonstrated their potential at times. Gazing into next season, the Lady Hawks bring back several key contributors as they look to compete in the MEAC Northern Division.

The club wrapped the season 7-40 (4-12 MEAC) on the season.

GENERAL

UMES STUDENT-ATHLETES GRADUATION

UMES was recognized by the MEAC for having the league's highest graduation success rate (GSR) for the fifth consecutive year, earning an 89% Graduation Success Rate for student-athletes that competed from 2003 to 2006. This year, several current and former student-athletes were being recognized for the academic accomplishments, including a student-athletes receiving graduate degrees and graduating with honors.
