Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is pleased to announce that senior track & field star Damion Drummond has qualified for the Olympic Trials in Jamaica. Drummond will head out to Kingston, Jamaica for the trials on June 25-27.

"Right now Damion is probably one of the top two runners in Jamaica in the 800 meter run," said UMES Head Coach Ernest Barrett. "This is an incredible opportunity for [Drummond] to represent not only his country, but UMES, and add to its rich history and traditions."

Drummond has been training non-stop since he last competed in the NCAA Regionals in Gainesville, FL. In that event he finished seventh with a time of 1:49.29 a time better than some other regional qualifiers that competed in the Championships.

"I'm pretty pumped," said Drummond. "This is a big event for me, there have been a few trials and I didn't have the confidence to go and try-out for them. But, since coming to UMES it has given me the confidence to compete. It was definitely a decision for the best. I am excited, Jamaica hasn't seen me run yet and I want to live up to my potential and the expectations of my country, my school, and Coach Barrett," he added.

Drummond transferred to UMES two seasons ago from the University of Tennessee. He won a championship there but wasn't competing as well as he though he could. "Damion's team was great there, but he needed some individual attention, we were able to provide that here," said Barrett.

Even if Drummond fails to qualify for the Jamaican Olympic Trials he can still represent his country in the Central American and Caribbean Games or even the World University Games.
