July 1, 2004 Princess Anne, MD - Head Track and Field Coach Ernest Barrett is enjoying his time in England. The International Medallist Association Inc., a non-profit organization, called upon the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's headman to fly to London and help the youth of service men and women stationed overseas. "I'm looking forward to helping these young people, we are in combat in several different places, these children's parents are fighting for us, the United States, and this is my chance to give something back to them with my knowledge and skills," said Barrett. Barrett left the States on June 12 and will return home on July 3rd. 1968 gold medallist Ron Freeman, who won the 4 x 400 meter relay in Mexico City, accompanies him on the three-week tour. "The program continues throughout the summer," he said. "Ron and I are giving the three weeks at the England bases." Freeman and Barrett will spend one week each at Alconbury Air Force Base, Lakenheath Air Force base, and Croughton Air Force Base. Each camp will feature track exercises, motivational lessons, community service, and fun for youth ages six to fourteen. A Unites States Military Grant funds the camps.
Barrett was originally scheduled to attend last year's camp but stayed home to attend the birth of his daughter. "I had to go this year, it is such a great opportunity. Its nice to travel, but its not what I get out of it, its what I can give to the kids."
