Javier Olivas is in his second season as graduate assistant coach with the University Maryland Eastern Shore cross county and track and field team.
Olivas' responsibilities include coaching the Hawks throwers as well as recruiting, track meet management, equipment, team travel and learning the administrative aspects of running a Division I athletic program.
He is pursing his Master's in the School of Agriculture and Natural Sciences.
Olivas, of Del Rio, Texas, is a 2008 graduate of Texas A&M University, where he was a four-year member of the Aggies' track and field team as a shot putter and discus thrower.
During his tenure at Texas A&M, Olivas was a three-time All-Big 12 performer as well as a two-time all-region performer in the shot put. In the classroom, he earned two Verizon Scholar-Athlete awards.
In the 2008 season, Olivas qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put after finishing fourth in the Midwest Region, where he set a career best of 18.03 meters. Indoors, he set a career best of 17.68 in the shot put during the Kentucky Invitational to become the No. 9 performer on the A&M all-time list.
In 2007, he placed eighth at Midwest Regional with a mark of 55-5 ½ in the shot and was eighth at Midwest Regional with a mark of 55-5 ½.
As a sophomore in 2006, Olivas earned a mark of 57-5 ¾ in the discus, placing 10th at NCAA Midwest Regional.
During his freshman campaign, he turned in a college-best throw of 54-8 ¾ in the shot at the indoor Big 12 Championships to finish 12th. Outside of track and field, he earned his first Scholar-Athlete Award.
Olivas is a product of Del Rio High School where he was a distact champion in shot put and discus. He went on to place fourth at the Class 5A state meet in the shot put. He set a school record in the shot with a throw of 59-2 ¼. He also was a two-time regional qualifier in the shot put under coach Daniel Gomez.
Olivas was a Two-time all-district selection in football (as a tight end) and basketball. He was named the team's Most Outstanding Receiver on the gridiron and also won the Mr. Basketball award.
Olivas was also very much involved in the community as a student-athlete. He was a member of Aggie Athletes Involved, an organization of student-athletes at Texas A&M doing community service in the Brazos Valley. He was also a two year member of SAAC, representing the Track & Field team.
Aside from his duties at UMES, Olivas enjoys relaxing at home, reading and crabbing and fishing on the Eastern Shore. |
