PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks started the 2005 cross-country season off with a bang, placing three runners in the top ten and taking home a second place finish in the 2005 Lid Lifter Invitational hosted by UMES.

It proved to be a perfect day on the Labor Day Holiday weekend, sunny and cool, "a good way to start off the season," said Head Coach Ernest Barrett. "I was impressed, you never know what you are going to get on the first meet of the season."

The Hawks showed well placing Alfred Singoei, a transfer from Iowa State, in fifth place for the best Hawk finish. Right behind was Geoffrey Rutto in sixth place. They both ran respective times of 26:26.60 and 26:28.24 on the five mile course. Christopher Havrilla posted a time of 28:12.30 to take home ninth place.

Other Hawks finishing the race included Clayton James in 11th, William McCollough in 20th, Mikel Thomas in 23rd, Ronnie Beard in 24th, Gareth Burrowes in 27th, Christopher Morrison in 28th and Jeffrey Meyers in 30th.

The top five finishers combined to post the Hawks a score of 51, good enough for second place overall and 17 points ahead of third place Delaware State.

The Spartans of Norfolk State took home the meet title and posted a first place score of 17, placing six runners in the top ten. David Kemboi won the race with a time 24:59.96 and fellow runner Hillary Cheruiyot took home second with a time of 25:01.01.

Delaware State's top finisher, Lawrence Davenport was tenth. Bowie State finished fourth with Ramon Valentine coming in 19th.
