Princess Anne, Md. -
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks Cross-Country team opened their season with a bang capturing first place in their own meet, the 2004 Cappy Anderson Invitational. They didn't just take the title, they owned the course, taking five of the first six places to miss perfection by one point.
In the season opener for several of the schools UMES looked strongest as Barnabas Togom repeated as champion of this event from last season blistering the course with a time of 26:48.65. He was followed closely by transfer Geoffrey Rutto who came home just behind him with a time of 27:17.90. Less than one minute later Hawk standout Damion Drummond took third with a 27:34.58 on the five mile course.
Togom's fellow Kenyan, Frederick Keter took fourth place with a time of 28:13.15. Christopher Havrilla was the next Hawk through the line taking sixth place with a time of 28:45.91. He was just behind Hampton University's Jerome Kennedy who took fifth with a time of 28:29.19.
John Woodside, Jeff Scranton, both of George Washington University, Brandon King of Hampton and Lawrence Davenport of Delaware State University rounded out the top ten.
The incredible finishes of the Hawks assured them of the championship scoring just 16 points. George Washington scored 56 points to take second place while Hampton was third with 72.
Delaware State took home fourth place with a score of 97 points while Bowie State and Norfolk State rounded out the field.
