Princess Anne, Md. -
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks had a strong outing taking second place in their own meet, The 2004 Cappy Anderson Invitational, as Eva Slavikova broke the course record to win the race. Slavikova dominated from beginning to end running a time of 19:20.91 on the 3.1 mile course breaking the old mark set by Jackie Truncellito of Loyola College.
She wasn't the only Lady Hawk with an outstanding performance as freshman Pavla Zavoralova took home seventh place with a time of 20:17.01, thirty seconds ahead of the eighth place finisher.
Deborah Meadows, Evelynn Mendoza, and Kori Barrett also had strong showings taking 12, 13, and 15 places respectively.
The Colonials of George Washington were the ones who controlled the meet however as Mae Polhemus took second with a time of 19:50.35. She was followed by her teammates Lindsay Blumm (19:58.98), Eyrnne Jones (20:04.82), Michelle Concannon (20:12.35), Bridget Skeuse (20:47.70), and Olivia Schramm (21:46.20), who finished fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, and tenth respectively. That incredible performance led them to capture the team tile with just 25 points.
Norfolk State had a solid outing from Denisha Hudson who was third with a time of 19:56.20 and Lirah Tallam who took ninth with a time of 21:16.01.
"I am really happy with how both meets went," said Head Coach Ernest Barrett. "Not only did they go very smoothly but the Hawks proved victorious individually in both races. The men won and the women took second. This was a great day for UMES."
