Sept. 9, 2006 Hunt Valley, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) Men's Cross Country program kicked-off its 2006 season in fine fashion, picking up an individual title and taking second among all Division I teams at the Towson Invitational. Alfred Singoei defeated over 130 entrants with a time of 26:59.49 on the five mile course to claim the championship. His first place finish gave the Hawks a second place ranking among all DI teams with a score of 68. They tallied 121 in the overall course, good enough for fourth in the larger 14 team field. Not to be outdone the Lady Hawks saw star returner Janeth Chelangat come home tenth overall with a time of 19:48.49 in the 5,000 meter event. Her finish placed UMES sixth overall in the 15 team field with 154 points but third with 79 points among the DI teams. Other solid finihes for the Hawks included Solomon Kirongo in 19th and Clayton James in 24th on the men's side while Merrecia James was 13th and Betty Chumbe was 16th in the women's race. Importantly the women placed higher than Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes Delaware State, Howard and Coppin State while the men's finish was higher than all of those schools and Morgan State. The following release appears compliments of the Towson University Media Relation Office. Freshman Michelle Donadio led three Towson University runners in the top six places with a second place finish as the host Tigers claimed the 2006 Towson Invitational women's championship at Oregon Ridge Park on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, senior Will Murdoch led three Salisbury University runners who finished in the top five spots as the Sea Gulls earned the men's title, beating the United States Naval Academy by 14 points.
Donadio led the Tigers to the women's title by finishing with a time of 18:51 while Salisbury sophomore Kelly Sullivan won the individual women's title by crossing the finish line in 18:42.
