Hunt Valley, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men and women's cross-country athletes headed up state today to compete in the Towson Invitational, hosted by the Tigers of Towson University. While the full women's squad did not compete the ones that did shone bright as Sophomore Sensation Eva Slavikova came home in first place with a time of 18:19, 13 seconds faster than the next place runner. Freshman standout Pavla Zavoralova was the next Lady Hawk to finish as she was last week, coming home 15th with a time of 19:36. The third and final UMES runner to compete in the women's race was Deborah Meadows who took 56th place with a time of 21:15. UMES did not have enough runners in the field of 122 to place as a team. George Washington, Towson, Hofstra, Loyola, and Salisbury were the top five finishers. On the men's side the Hawks took seventh place among the 14 teams including finishes higher than MEAC foes Coppin State, Morgan State and Delaware State Universities. The Naval Academy won the race, University of Delaware came home second and local rival Salsibury University was third. Due to illness the Hawks star Barnabas Togom was unable to run but transfer Geoffrey Rutto took on the burden and ran a time of 27:28 to take 14th place. He was followed by Damion Drummond in 26th with a time of 27:56. Frederick Keter took 42nd, Clayton James took 60th, and Christopher Havrilla was 75th in the field of 134 runners. Omar Fikri, Antoine Pugh, Ronnie Beard, and Gareth Burrowes also competed for the Hawks. The Hawks are back in action next weekend in Annapolis, Md. as they compete in the Salty Sea Dog Invitational.
