UMES CROSS-COUNTRY SHOWS WELL AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Salisbury, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore took second place in the men's division and third in the women's in the hunt for the Maryland State Championships today. The Salisbury University men's team and Loyola College women's team claimed first place honors at the Maryland State Cross Country Championship Meet in Salisbury on Saturday. The news of the meet was the Hawk's Barnabas Togom who won the men's individual title, registering a time of 25:18 over the 8k course at Winter Place Park. James DaSilva of Loyola was second in 25:36 and Tristan Gilbert of Salisbury finished third in 26:07. That clinched the University division title for the men. Eva Slavikova of UMES finished third in 22:01 while Loyola's Andrea Rovegno won the women's individual title with a time of 21:30 over the 6k course. Loyola's Jackie Truncelito was second in 21:53. The top 15 overall men and women's finishers earn all-State honors. The Hawks placed four men among the top 15, accompanied by six from Salsibury and three from Loyola. On the women's side, Towson had seven runners among the top 15 while Loyola had six. UMES placed only one with Katerina Matousouva finishing 16th. Hawk's top men's finishers: Barnabus Togom (1st, 25.18); Marlon Tomlinson (6th, 26.50); Keter Frederick (9th, 27:03); Damion Drummond (13th, 27.25). UMES top women's finishers: Eva Slavikova (3rd, 22:01); Katerina Matousova (16th, 23.31); Evelynn Mendoza (22nd, 23.52), Tasha Century (23rd, 24.00).
