SEVEN UMES HAWKS HELP LEAD IN SWEEP OF DEL. STATE INVITATIONAL

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --Seven University of Maryland Eastern Shore Cross Country runners helped lead the Hawks to first place finishes in the men's and women's Delaware State Invitational Friday afternoon. Eunice Jones and Cynthia Anais took first and second place respectively for the women, while Basil Melek finished first for the men.
This is the second meet in which the Hawks have swept a race this season. Its previous first place finishes came Sept. 10 in the Delaware State Open. The men finished with a total of 42 points, while the women finished with 31 in the Invitational.
Jones completed the race in 18:06.66. Anais crossed the finish line at 18:39.35. The pair has been consistent in leading the Hawks this season, with both finishing in the top five, if not top 10 of their field.
Teammate Hana Jiraskova finished in 6th place at 19:23.98, and Emilie Ducados rounded out the top 10 with her time of 20:14.16. Melina Gallas took 12th in a time of 20:31.00. Fellow Hawks' runners Jennell Wade and Kenesha Abrams took 16th and 20th respectively, in times of 21:12.96 and 21:50.90.
Melek finished just shy of a minute faster than his opponent, taking first place in a time of 25:06. Zavior Brown was not far behind when he finished 3rd in 26:26. Shadrick Maritim and Donohue Williams finished 7th and 15th respectively for the Hawks. Maritim crossed in 28:13 with Williams finishing in 30:15.
Codjo Gbedo took 16th in 30:15, with teammates Alonzo Jarmon, Shaquille Turner, Mark Williams and Christopher Champion finished 18th, 20th, 21st, and 25th respectively. Turner and Williams finished in 31:21 and 31:22 respectively. Champion finished in 33:31.
The two teams have been on the road since its last meet in Princess Anne, Maryland on Sept. 17. The Hawks will compete in the University of Delaware Blue and Gold Invitational (Oct. 15) before returning to host the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference Championship on Oct. 29.
