UMES MEN PLACE SECOND AT DELAWARE STATE XC INVATIONAL; WOMEN FOURTH

DOVER, DE. – For the fourth straight meet, the UMES men’s cross country team finished strong with a second place finish at the Delaware State Invitational. The men finished second out of seven schools in the competition, while the women placed fourth in a six school field.
In the Men’s 5 Mile Run, the Hawks’ eight runners combined for the score of 45, finishing just eight points behind first place Howard. In the Women’s 5k competition, the Lady Hawks compiled a score of 105.
Three Hawk runners finished in the Top 10, led by Freshman Khalil Rmidi who had another individual second place finish with a time of 27:25.51. Freshman Nassor Whitehead (Sunrise, FL) finished fourth in the field with a time of 27:52.65, while Freshman Derrick Cheruiyot (Nairobi, Kenya) placed tenth with a time of 28:44.20.
Other notable performers for the Hawks were Senior Codjo Gbedo (New Carrollton, MD) with a time of 29:26.84 and a 13th place finish, and Senior Paul Jerry (Washington, DC) finished at 30:21.36, good for a 19th place finish.
The Lady Hawks had eight runners which averaged a 5k time of 20:54. Freshman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, MD) was the top UMES performer, finishing tenth in the field of 70 runners with a time of 19:39.40. Sophomores Shantol Hemley (St. Catherines, Jamaica) and Margret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) finished 16th and 17th in the competition, respectively.
While Howard won the men’s competition with a total time of 2:21:58, Hampton won the women’s competition with a total time of 1:35:16. Howard’s Elisha Metto finished first in the men’s race with an individual time of 26:43.61and Hampton’s Nichelle Harris won the women’s race with a time of 18:07.12.
For the Hawks, is the final cross country meet of the year before the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, which will be hosted by UMES on Saturday, October 26th.
