Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) hosted the UMES Lid Lifter Invitational on Saturday, September, 6, 2003. Unsurprisingly, runners from the Hawk's Men's and Women's Cross Country teams came across the line first. Barnabas Togom (UMES) ran a time of 27:07.43 for his triumph in the Men's race and Eva Slavikova (UMES) ran a blazing time of 19:28.81 to win the Women's race.

However, Norfolk State University grabbed first place as a team in the men's division, as Thomas Hightower (NSU) followed Togom (UMES) and ran a time of 27:32.86. Hightower, who ran a time of 27:32.86, lead as four of his other teammates followed closely behind to finish in the top 10. George Washington also showed up in the top with three runners led by Ryan Shaver. Tristan Gilbert also (SSU) placed in the top ten.

On the Women's side, Norfolk State University also triumphed as a team as Linah Tallam ran a time of 20:00.76, while leading her teammates Denisha Hudsoon, Agatha Gitundu and Judy Tubei to all finish in the top 10. Finishing second overall was Bridget Skeuse of George Washington with a time of 19:41.15. Lauren Bragg and Kellie McKay of Salisbury University finished in the top ten, also. Katerina Matousova ran a time of 20:15.89 and Tasha Century came through in 21:31.93 to receive medals for finishing in the top ten with Slavikova, as they tied with Salisbury University for second place overall in the meet.

Due to great weather, team participation, and outstanding performances by the athletes of all teams, the UMES Lid Lifter Invitational was a success. The next home meet on September 20, 2003, the Cappy Anderson Invitational, is greatly anticipated. The Hawks will next be competing at the Towson Invitational in Hunt Valley, MD on September 13, 2003.
