VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) won the men's race this past weekend at the UMES Cappy Anderson Invitational. A big part of that was Sophomore Peter Sang, who won the race with a time of 25:51.06 on the five mile course. For that impressive performance Sang was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) Cross-Country Athlete of the Week. Sang bested 52 other runners on the 8K course, and led UMES to a win over Seton Hall University (in second place). UMES also topped Howard University, Coppin State University, Hampton University and Morgan State University. This is Sang's first win of the season. He was the best UMES runner at the Towson Invitational coming in seventh among 88 runners. He also took a third place finish in the UMES Lid Lifter to open the season. His time at the Cappy Anderson Invitational was his best of the season. Lady Hawk Merrecia James also received a nod from the MEAC and an `Other Top Performer' for her effort at the same race. James took fifth but led her team to a first place finish as well. Hampton's Jahlisa Smith won the women's award as she won the Cappy Anderson Invitational, breaking the course record with a time of 18:07.09.
