UMES SET TO HOST MEAC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS ON SATURDAY

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.--The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) will host the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross Country Championships this Saturday, with all teams from the conference arriving in Princess Anne to compete. UMES has hosted this event since 2008, which will take place on the cross country course just east of campus. The women's runners will compete in a 5k beginning at 9:45am, with the men's 8k race following at 10:30am.

The Hawk men's team are coming into the championship meet with two first-place finishes, as well as finishing at least fourth in every single meet this year. They are lead by star freshman Khalil Rmidi (Malaga, Spain), who has placed in the top ten in every meet he has run, including two second-place finishes in the Farm Run Invitational (Oct. 5th) and the Delaware State Invitational (Oct. 11th). Other Hawk runners with exceptional finishes include freshman Derrick Cheruiyot (Nairobi, Kenya), who has had three top ten times this year, and fellow freshman Nassor Whitehead (Sunrise, Fla.), who placed fourth in the Delaware State Invitational, along with a 5th place finish in the Hornet Invitational (Sept. 14th).

For the women's team, they enter the championship meet with three second-place finishes they have also never finished below fourth in any meet this year. Highlighting their team is freshman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.) with four top ten times this season, including a sixth-place finish at the Farm Run Invitational. Sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine's, Jamaica) has the best individual women's time this year with a second-place finish in the Farm Run Invitational, while junior Margaret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) has also contributed a top ten time this year.


 

 

Florida A&M took the 2012 conference crown for both genders, and will be here to defend their title, along with all 13 MEAC schools.

This will be the last in-conference meet for UMES this season, however, next up for the Hawks will be the NCAA Mid Atlantic Regionals in Bethlehem, Pa. on November 15th
