Oct. 26, 2006 PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) cross country team will end their regular season with a trip to this weekend's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship on Oct. 27. The Championship, held at the SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., will feature all 11 MEAC institutions. The Spartans of Norfolk State earned the Triple Crown last year and will try for their eighth consecutive cross country title in the men's race. Howard, the 2005 cross country champion, will vie for their fourth women's title in five years. The Fighting Hawks finished fourth at the 2005 MEAC Championship and have three of the top 20 conference times this season. Senior Alfred Singoei (Nairobi, Kenya/Iowa State), UMES' top finisher at last year's championship (23:45.0), has won four races this season (9/9 - Towson Invite, 9/23 - UMES Cappy Anderson Invite, 10/7 - UMES Duel Meet, 10/16 - Delaware Invite) and will look for a good outing this weekend. Sophomore Solomon Kirongo (Nairobi, Kenya/Kipkabus) and junior Clayton James (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Kingston) are also top contenders as they own the 11th and 12th highest times, respectively, in the MEAC this season. The Lady Hawks will look to improve from a ninth place showing at last year's championship. UMES owns three of the top five league times this season, with sophomore Janeth Chelangat (Nairobi, Kenya/Kipsigis) leading a 2-3-4 placement for the Lady Hawks. Chelangat (18:20.63) has the second best MEAC time this season while sophomores Merrecia James (18:26.90) and Betty Chumbe (18:30.40) own the third and fourth highest conference times, respectively.
