CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES EIGHT UMES RUNNERS TO ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS TEAM

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had eight of its cross country student-athletes earn Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference All-Academic Honors. Andre Walsh, a National Collegiate Athletic Association All-American in outdoor track and field was one of the eight honorees. Teammate's Yonatan Estifanos, Alonzo Jarmon, Basil Melek, Javierelle Turner and Shaquille Turner, Emilie Ducados and Annis Mars were also named to the MEAC All-Academic Honors team.

To be named to the list, honorees must have maintained a cumulative 3.0 grade point average during the 2011-12 school year. A total of 92 student-athletes from the 13 MEAC member institutions were announced to the list.

"I commend the men's and women's cross country student-athletes that have maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average during the 2011-12 academic school year," said Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas.

Thomas would also commend the athletic support staff that would assist in contributing to the academic recognition of the student-athletes. "Our institutions, coaches and support staffs are committed to the academic success of our student-athletes," Thomas continued.

Ducados and Mars will lead the women's cross country team in the MEAC Cross Country Championships Saturday, Oct. 27 at 9:30 a.m., while Jarmon, the Tuner's and Estifanos lead the men's team. The championship will be held on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland.
