HAWK CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PLACE FIFTH AT MEAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.--Freshman Khalil Rmidi (Malaga, Spain) paced all Hawk runners by placing sixth in the men's race at the MEAC Championships on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) campus. His effort, along with 13 other runners for the Hawks, led to a fifth place finish for both the men and women's cross country teams at today's event.
The men's team combined for 138 points in the 8k event, with Rmidi's time of 25:58.20 leading the way. Other notable Hawks were freshman Derrick Cheruiyot (Nairobi, Kenya) with a time of 27:26.90; frehsman Nassor Whitehead (Sunrise, Fla.) coming in at a time of 28:33.50; senior Codjo Gbedo (New Carrollton, Md.) finishing at 28:34.00; and senior Paul Jerry (Washington, D.C.) crossing the finish line at 28:58.20.
For the lady Hawks, freshman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.) led the way in the women's 5k race. Her time of 19:29.80 was good for 17th in the field of 83 runners. Other solid performances came from sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine's, Jamaica) with a time of 19:48.6 and junior Margaret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), who crossed the finish line at 19:59.30. Overall, the women's team combined to score 163 points.
Florida A&M won the men's and women's championships for the second year in a row. The Rattlers also boasted the top male finisher, junior Elias Chesire, who completed the race in 25:04.00, and the top four runners were all Florida A&M athletes as well. Morgan State senior Ashley Seymour won the women's race with her time of 18.10.00.
Throughout the event, the Hawks and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) officials, as well as all athletes at the event wore pink as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month. UMES head cheerleading coach and cancer survivor Raejon Makonnen served as the honorary starter for both races.
The Hawks will conclude the 2013 cross country schedule with the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on November 15th.
